The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is a species of reptile in the family Dermochelyidae. It is the largest of all sea turtles, reaching a length of 2.3 meters and a weight of more than 600 kilograms. A male individual weighed 916 kilograms, although tortoises of this size are rare. It is found in all tropical or subtropical seas and is the only species in its family. This species has many unique characteristics that greatly distinguish it from other sea turtles. Its metabolic rate is about 3 times higher than expected for a reptile of its size, which, coupled with its countercurrent heat exchangers and large size, allows it to maintain a body temperature of up to 18°C ​​above the surrounding water. Some scientists even believe that the channel turtle has some ability to generate its own body heat, like a mammal, despite the fact that reptiles are ectothermic or “cold-blooded”, so they depend on external temperatures to regulate their own. . However, this species can also be considered a gigantotherm.
