The mata mata, mata-matá or caripatúa turtle (Chelus fimbriata) is a turtle of the Chelidae family native to South America. It is the only living species of the genus Chelus.

Matamata is the largest species of the Chelidae family. It is unmistakable for its large, triangular, flattened and elongated head. It has a brown or blackish carapace 45 cm long. The plastron is narrow, narrow, notched forward and sharply set back, and in the male it is concave.
